What I use as an engineer and designer

I change up things fairy often, so this page will serve as a living document. Softwares are changing fast, if you know anything works better for you please let me know as well.

Hardwares

  • Monitor: Dell 4k P2715Q. I am pretty happy with this screen, as it does not contains a speaker, I connect it to Bose SoundLink Mini II.
  • Speaker: Bose SoundLink Mini II for desktop, an awesome speaker both at home or camp outside; and 2 x Sonos Play 3 White mounted at wall for casual music.
  • Headphone: Bose QuietComfort 35, it is my most used headphone yet, wireless, long battery life, and good noise cancellation. The only downside is that it is a bit hot in Singapore.
  • Laptop: Macbook Pro 15 inch Mid 2015. It is a bit old but I feel it can get work done, especially it works with 4k monitor without any problem. Personally I don’t like USB-C used in later MBPs.
  • Dock: OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock. With this dock, I just need to connect a thunderbolt cable to my laptop, and the dock connect with Gigabit Ethernet, my keyboard, Wacom Intuos and sometimes my SD cards. But it is kind of disappointing.
  • Keyboard: I use Filco Ninja Majestouch 2 with red switch at home and Poker II with red switch at work.
  • Mouse: Logitech Anywhere MX 2. Wireless, rechargeable with ultra long battery, it is the mouse I can trust with, and easy to carry.
  • Drawing Tablet: Wacom Intuos Medium size, I use it for post processing my DSLR photos.
  • Laptop Stand: Rain mStand. This stand sits besides my 4k monitor.
  • Monitor Stand: iQunix Spider. I put my 4k monitor and Bose SoundLink Mini on top of it, keyboard and Wacom Intuos beneath it.
  • Chair: Red Herman Miller Sayl, it is well designed, very functional and very comfortable.
  • Desk: IKEA LILVER with bamboo table top.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS): Synology DS916+ with 4 x WD Red 4TB NAS Hard Drive and RAID6 configurations. I was using Synology DS251j before this.

Editor & Terminal

Desktop Apps

  • Writing: iA Writer: for iOS and macOS for writing, I love the font they were using called Nitti. Occasionally I also use Hemingway Editor to do some final check before publishing.
  • Password management: 1Password.
  • GTD: Things App for both iOS and macOS.
  • Workflows: Alfred for daily tasks and search with some custom workflows.
  • Design: When I comes to digital design(mostly mobile apps), I work in Sketch, Principle and Framer.
  • Dealing with images: I use ImageOptim to reduce image file sizes, SVGO to optimise SVG size, and ImageMagick to convert format and scale images.
  • Cloud Storage: I use Dropbox mostly, Google Drive for shared documentations, and CloudApp to share screenshots.
  • Keep Mac awake: Amphetamine.
  • Mac window manager: Magnet.
  • Colour picker: Sip.
  • Screencasts: I use ScreenFlow to record and edit my screencasts.
  • Music: I use Sonos for both iOS and macOS to control music at home, and iTunes for Apple Music.
  • Mail client: Spark, previously I used to use Newton and I still prefer it if not the price.
  • Video player: mpv, it is the best video player I have ever used.
  • System status: I use iStat Menus all the time and I can’t live without it.
  • Manage APIs: Paw.
  • Screenshot annotation: Skitch, it is not maintained but there is no better alternative that works as simple as Skitch.
